Reakcje Sandmeyera nie są stosowane do wytwarzania fluorków i jodków arylu. W przypadku fluorków arylu sole arenediazoniowe reagują z kwasem fluoroborowowym, dając fluoroboran diazoniowy w postaci wytrąconej soli. Jak przedstawiono na Rysunku 3, pozostałości te oddziela się, suszy i ogrzewa aż do rozkładu z wytworzeniem odpowiednich fluorków arylu. Takie reakcje nazywane są reakcjami Schiemanna. Podobnie sole arenediazoniowe reagują z jodkiem potasu, tworząc jodki arylu.

Arenediazonium salts can be used to make substituted aromatic compounds. In these reactions, the diazonium group is replaced by other functional groups such as halides, hydroxyl, and nitrile. The transcript focuses on how this chemistry is used to form aryl chlorides, bromides, fluorides, iodides, and nitriles.

When arenediazonium salts react with copper(I) salts of chloride, bromide, or cyanide, they form the corresponding aryl chloride, aryl bromide, or aryl nitrile. These are called Sandmeyer reactions. The exact mechanism is complex, but it is thought to proceed through an aryl copper intermediate.

Aryl nitriles are especially useful because they can be hydrolyzed to carboxylic acids very easily. For that reason, the Sandmeyer reaction is an important route from aryl amines to substituted benzonitriles. This makes it a practical step in aromatic synthesis.

Sandmeyer reactions are not used to make aryl fluorides or aryl iodides. To form aryl fluorides, the arenediazonium salt reacts with fluoroboric acid to give diazonium fluoroborate as a precipitated salt. The solid is then isolated, dried, and heated until it decomposes to form the aryl fluoride. This process is called the Schiemann reaction. Arenediazonium salts can also react with potassium iodide to form aryl iodides.
