Enthalpy within the Cell

Energia wewnętrzna, czyli E, to energia zawarta w układzie, taka jak energia zawarta w wiązaniach chemicznych i przypadkowy ruch jego cząstek. System i jego otoczenie mogą przenosić energię między nimi.
Zmiana energii wewnętrznej układu, delta E, jest równa sumie q, całkowitego ciepła przekazanego do systemu, i w, całkowitej pracy wykonanej w systemie.
W większości reakcji biochemicznych nie jest wykonywana żadna praca, dlatego zmiana energii wewnętrznej jest równoważna innej funkcji termodynamicznej zwanej entalpią.
Zmianie entalpii układu lub ∆H towarzyszy równa i przeciwna zmiana entalpii otoczenia.
Proces egzotermiczny ma miejsce, gdy system uwalnia ciepło do otoczenia i jest reprezentowany przez ujemną entalpię. Proces endotermiczny ma miejsce, gdy system nabiera ciepła, reprezentowanego przez dodatnią entalpię.
Żywe komórki to otwarte systemy, które wymieniają materię i energię z otoczeniem poprzez procesy egzotermiczne i endotermiczne, zgodnie z pierwszą zasadą termodynamiki.

Entalpia (H) służy do opisu termodynamiki procesów chemicznych i fizycznych. Entalpię definiuje się jako sumę energii wewnętrznej układu (U) i iloczynu matematycznego jego ciśnienia (P) i objętości (V): H = U + PV 

 Entalpia jest także funkcją stanu. Wartości entalpii dla określonych substancji nie można zmierzyć bezpośrednio; można określić jedynie zmiany entalpii procesów chemicznych lub fizycznych. W przypadku procesów zachodzących pod stałym ciśnieniem (powszechny warunek wielu zmian chemicznych i fizycznych) zmiana entalpii (ΔH) wynosi: ΔH = ΔU + PΔV 

 Ciepło wydzielane podczas pracy palnika Bunsena jest równe zmianie entalpii zachodzącej reakcji spalania metanu, ponieważ zachodzi ona przy zasadniczo stałym ciśnieniu atmosfery. Ujemna wartość zmiany entalpii, ΔH < 0, wskazuje na reakcję egzotermiczną; wartość dodatnia ΔH > 0 wskazuje na reakcję endotermiczną.

 ΔH i zmiana energii swobodnej, zwana delta G (∆G), są powiązane następującym równaniem, znanym jako równanie Gibbsa Helmholtza;

 ΔG = ΔH – TΔS 

 Zwykle obliczamy standardowe warunki pH, temperatury i ciśnienia przy pH 7,0 w układach biologicznych, odpowiednio 25 stopni Celsjusza i 100 kilopaskali (1 bar). Należy zauważyć, że warunki komórkowe różnią się znacznie od warunków standardowych, dlatego też standardowe obliczone wartości ∆G dla reakcji biologicznych będą się różnić wewnątrz komórki.

Cellular enthalpy describes how heat and energy change during chemical and physical processes. Enthalpy is written as H and is defined as the sum of a system’s internal energy, U, and the product of pressure and volume, PV. It is a state function, which means its value depends on the state of the system, not the path taken.

Scientists cannot measure the enthalpy of a single substance directly. They can determine enthalpy changes, or ΔH, for a process instead. For reactions or changes that occur at constant pressure, which is common in many chemical and physical processes, ΔH equals ΔU + PΔV.

A simple example is the heat released when a Bunsen burner burns methane. That heat is equal to the enthalpy change of the combustion reaction because the reaction happens at essentially constant atmospheric pressure. A negative ΔH means the reaction is exothermic, while a positive ΔH means it is endothermic.

Enthalpy also connects to free energy through the Gibbs-Helmholtz equation, ΔG = ΔH − TΔS. In biology, standard conditions are usually pH 7.0, 25 degrees Celsius, and 100 kilopascals, or 1 bar. Cellular conditions often differ from these standards, so standard calculated ΔG values for biological reactions can change inside the cell.
