Aminy to związki polarne z samotną parą na atomie azotu, która rządzi ogólnym momentem dipolowym cząsteczki. Działają jako akceptory wiązań wodorowych w rozpuszczalnikach hydroksylowych.
Zazwyczaj aminy o niskiej masie cząsteczkowej - z mniej niż pięcioma atomami węgla - są mieszalne z wodą lub rozpuszczalne w wodzie. Dla porównania, aminy o dużej masie cząsteczkowej są albo oszczędnie, albo całkowicie nierozpuszczalne w wodzie, ponieważ niepolarne łańcuchy węglowodorowe są niekompatybilne z rozpuszczalnikami polarnymi.

Aminy są polarne. Odpowiednio, aminy pierwszorzędowe i drugorzędowe z wiązaniami N – H umożliwiają interakcje międzycząsteczkowych wiązań wodorowych. Ta interakcja powoduje wyższą temperaturę wrzenia amin niż alkany lub etery o porównywalnej masie cząsteczkowej, które wykazują jedynie słabsze oddziaływania, takie jak siły van der Waalsa lub oddziaływania dipol-dipol. Z drugiej strony alkohole mają wyższą temperaturę wrzenia niż aminy, ponieważ azot jest mniej elektroujemny niż tlen, co powoduje słabsze międzycząsteczkowe wiązania wodorowe między azotem i wodorem niż tlen i wodór. Aminy o niskiej masie cząsteczkowej są również rozpuszczalne w wodzie — wiązania wodorowe pomiędzy aminami i wodą, jak pokazano na Rysunku 4, powodują taką rozpuszczalność. Rozpuszczalność amin w wodzie maleje wraz ze wzrostem masy cząsteczkowej. Generalnie aminy zawierające mniej niż pięć atomów węgla są rozpuszczalne w wodzie. Ze względu na oddziaływanie pary elektronów atomu azotu i atomu wodoru wody nawet aminy trzeciorzędowe są rozpuszczalne w wodzie.

Amines show clear physical properties that depend on molecular size and structure. Low molecular weight amines are usually gases at room temperature, while higher molecular weight amines are often liquids or solids. Many low molecular weight amines also have a rotten fish-like smell, and diamines usually have a pungent odor.

Amines are polar molecules, so they can take part in intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Primary and secondary amines have N–H bonds that allow these interactions. Because of this, they usually have higher boiling points than alkanes or ethers with similar molecular weight, since those compounds rely on weaker van der Waals forces or dipole-dipole interactions.

Alcohols still boil at higher temperatures than amines. Nitrogen is less electronegative than oxygen, so the hydrogen bonding between nitrogen and hydrogen is weaker than the hydrogen bonding between oxygen and hydrogen. Tertiary amines have lower boiling points than primary or secondary amines because they do not have an N–H bond, so they cannot hydrogen bond in the same way.

Water solubility also changes with size. Low molecular weight amines are soluble in water because they can form hydrogen bonds with water molecules. In general, amines with fewer than five carbon atoms are water-soluble, and even tertiary amines can dissolve because the lone pair on nitrogen can interact with the hydrogen atom of water. As molecular weight increases, solubility decreases.

Amines can also be dangerous. In general, they are significantly toxic and may cause poisoning or death if swallowed because of their physiological activity. Some arylamines, such as benzidine and beta-naphthylamine, are carcinogenic and must be handled carefully. The poison dart frog Phyllobates terribilis also secretes toxic amine compounds, including batrachotoxin and batrachotoxinin A, and as little as 200 micrograms can cause irreversible cardiac arrest in humans.
