Ciało ludzkie jest złożonym systemem badanym w dwóch gałęziach biologii – anatomii i fizjologii.
Anatomia bada strukturę ciała i organizację różnych części ciała. Jest dalej podzielony na anatomię ogólną i mikroskopową.
Makroanatomia lub makroanatomia bada duże części ciała, takie jak serce i kości, bez użycia mikroskopu. 
Natomiast anatomia mikroskopowa lub mikroanatomia bada pojedyncze komórki i tkanki za pomocą mikroskopu.
Fizjologia bada, jak funkcjonują różne części ciała i mechanizmy, które napędzają te funkcje. W zależności od poziomu organizacji fizjologię można dalej podzielić na molekularną, komórkową i ogólnoustrojową. 
Fizjologię ogólnoustrojową można dalej podzielić ze względu na układy narządów. Działy te obejmują fizjologię układu sercowo-naczyniowego, która bada serce i układ krwionośny, oraz neurofizjologię, która bada układ nerwowy.
Zasada komplementarności budowy i funkcji mówi, że struktury anatomiczne człowieka wspierają ich funkcję fizjologiczną. Na przykład mięśnie zawierają komórki kurczliwe, które pozwalają im poruszać ciałem.

Anatomia człowieka to naukowe badanie struktur ciała. Niektóre z tych struktur są bardzo małe i mogą być obserwowane oraz analizowane tylko przy użyciu mikroskopu. Inne, większe struktury mogą być łatwo obserwowane, manipulowane, mierzone i ważone. Słowo „Anatomia” pochodzi od greckiego rdzenia oznaczającego „rozciąć”. Pierwsze badania anatomii człowieka przeprowadzono poprzez obserwację zewnętrznej struktury ciała oraz ran żołnierzy i innych obrażeń. Później lekarzom pozwolono na sekcję ciał zmarłych w celu poszerzenia ich wiedzy. Podczas rozkrawania ciała jego struktury są oddzielane, aby obserwować ich fizyczne cechy i relacje względem siebie nawzajem. Pomimo że ta metoda nadal jest używana w szkołach medycznych, na kursach anatomii i laboratoriach patologicznych, opracowano także kilka technik obrazowania, które pozwalają na obserwację struktur u żywych ludzi. Te techniki umożliwiają lekarzom wizualizację struktur wewnątrz żywego ciała, takich jak nowotwory lub złamane kości.

Anatomiści przyjmują dwa ogólne podejścia do badania struktur ciała: topograficzne i systemowe. Anatomię topograficzną charakteryzuje badanie wzajemnych związków wszystkich struktur w określonym obszarze ciała, na przykład w jamie brzusznej. Human anatomy studies the structures of the body. Some body structures are so small that they can only be seen and examined with a microscope. Others are large enough to be viewed, handled, measured, and weighed.

The word anatomy comes from a Greek root meaning “to cut apart.” Early study of the human body began with observing the outside of the body and the injuries seen in soldiers and other patients. Later, physicians were allowed to dissect dead bodies to learn more. Dissection means cutting a body apart to study its parts and how they relate to one another. It is still used in medical schools, anatomy courses, and pathology labs.

Today, several imaging methods also help scientists and clinicians study the living body. These techniques make it possible to see internal structures without dissection. They can show problems such as a cancerous tumor or a fractured bone.

Anatomists use two main approaches. Regional anatomy studies all of the structures in one body area, such as the abdomen. This helps show how muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and other parts work together in that region. Systemic anatomy studies one body system at a time, such as the muscular system, and looks at all of the skeletal muscles in the body.

Physiology focuses on function rather than structure. It is the scientific study of the chemistry and physics of body structures and how they work together to support life. Much of physiology centers on homeostasis, which is the maintenance of steady internal conditions in living things.

Physiology also uses observation, including the naked eye and microscopes. It includes manipulations and measurements as well. Modern physiology often depends on carefully designed laboratory experiments that reveal how body structures and chemical compounds work.
