Ultrasonography, or renal ultrasound, is a noninvasive imaging technique using high-frequency sound waves to visualize the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and surrounding tissues. The sonographer places a transducer on the skin, which emits sound waves that bounce off internal structures, creating real-time images on a monitor without radiation exposure.
Q2: Why do patients need to drink water before a renal ultrasound?
Patients are instructed to drink 500-1000 milliliters of water about an hour before the procedure to fill the bladder. A full bladder provides a clearer view of the pelvic organs and lower urinary tract, ensuring better image quality and more accurate diagnostic results during the examination.
