Microbubble Handling

Microbubble handling is the controlled generation, stabilization, transport, and use of gas-filled bubbles in liquid systems, an important practice in bioengineering because bubble size and stability influence biological performance. Surfactants, lipids, or polymers stabilize the gas-liquid interface, while fluid flow, buoyancy, pressure, and coalescence determine how microbubbles move and persist. Careful control of concentration, size distribution, and exposure conditions supports reproducible experiments and device operation. Bioengineers apply microbubble handling in ultrasound imaging, targeted drug delivery, tissue engineering, and fluidic systems, where bubbles can enhance contrast, carry therapeutic cargo, or generate localized mechanical effects.

2023

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Taslima Zaman, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Since chemicals are commonly used for laboratory research purposes, it is extremely important to be adequately prepared to handle chemical spills or accidental release of hazardous chemicals, which can happen at any time. No matter how minor a spill may be, the inability to respond in an emergency situation could severely endanger public health or the environment. All chemical spills must be properly...

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Acclimation and Positive Reinforcement Training Pigs are social animals that respond best to calm, low-stress handling techniques. Acclimation and positive reinforcement training are important refinement strategies recommended...
