Neonatal Heart Scaffold

A neonatal heart scaffold is a bioengineered, three-dimensional structure designed to support the organization, growth, or repair of heart tissue in newborns. It works by providing a biomaterial framework whose architecture, stiffness, and porosity can guide cell attachment, tissue formation, and transport of nutrients and oxygen, while the material may gradually degrade as new tissue develops. In bioengineering, neonatal heart scaffolds are investigated as platforms for studying cardiac development, modeling congenital heart disease, and developing regenerative approaches for damaged or underdeveloped myocardium. Their design must balance structural support, biological compatibility, and adaptation to the growing heart.
