Arterial Diameter Measurement

Arterial diameter measurement is the quantitative assessment of the distance across an artery, a key indicator of vascular structure, blood flow, and cardiovascular function. It typically uses calibrated ultrasound, microscopy, or other imaging methods to identify the vessel walls and measure the lumen perpendicular to the artery’s long axis, often while accounting for changes during the cardiac cycle. In biology, these measurements help evaluate vasoconstriction, vasodilation, vascular development, and remodeling. Comparing arterial diameter under different conditions can reveal how neural signals, hormones, drugs, disease, or changes in blood pressure influence vascular resistance and tissue perfusion.

The polysaccharide capsule is the primary virulence factor in Cryptococcus neoformans, and its size correlates with strain virulence. Capsule diameter measurements are used in phenotypic testing and to gauge therapeutic efficacy. Here a standard method of capsule induction is presented, and two methods of staining and measuring diameter are compared.

Source: Shreyas Narsipur, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC A propeller is a twisted airfoil, where the angle of the chord changes with respect to the location, along the radial station, as shown in Figure 1. Propellers are widely used in aircraft and watercraft propulsion systems thereby necessitating detailed characterizations of propellers to design high performance vehicles. Figure 1. Chord, thickness, and pitch at a radial station. One of...

Source: Sharon Bord, MD, Department of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA When monitoring patients, it is important to obtain values that are accurate and reliable. Blood pressure monitoring is one of the essential vital signs, and for a majority of patients, measuring it utilizing non-invasive techniques provides accurate values. However, there are situations in which the blood pressure requires more exact, specific, and reliable measurements.
