Bacterial Growth

Bacterial growth is the increase in bacterial cell number within a population, a fundamental process in biology, ecology, medicine, and biotechnology. Under suitable conditions, bacteria obtain nutrients, synthesize cellular components, replicate their DNA, and divide by binary fission; population growth typically progresses through lag, exponential, stationary, and death phases as resources and environmental conditions change. Measuring growth through cell counts, turbidity, or colony formation helps researchers evaluate metabolism, identify antimicrobial effects, and optimize cultures. Understanding bacterial growth also supports studies of infection, microbiomes, food preservation, fermentation, and the development of strategies to manage antibiotic resistance.

Source: Laboratories of Dr. Ian Pepper and Dr. Charles Gerba - The University of Arizona Demonstrating Author: Luisa Ikner Bacteria are among the most abundant life forms on Earth. They are found in every ecosystem and are vital for everyday life. For example, bacteria affect what people eat, drink, and breathe, and there are actually more bacterial cells within a person’s body than mammalian cells. Because of the importance of bacteria, it is preferable to study particular species of bacteria...

Bacterial Growth Curve

2025

The bacterial growth curve is a fundamental concept in microbiology that describes the dynamics of bacterial population growth in a closed system with controlled environmental conditions, such as temperature and nutrient availability. This curve is divided into four distinct phases: lag, log (exponential), stationary, and death phases, each reflecting a unique stage of bacterial adaptation and growth. During the lag phase, bacteria acclimate to their surroundings by synthesizing essential...

Source: Cabeen, M. T., et al. Single-cell Microfluidic Analysis of Bacillus subtilis. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)The video demonstrates the use of a microfluidic device to observe bacterial growth at the single-cell level. It showcases how non-motile bacterial cells, confined within micro-scale trenches, are continuously nourished and imaged under a fluorescence microscope. The setup enables real-time visualization of cell division and lineage tracking across multiple generations.
