Cup Color Alternation

Cup color alternation is a behavioral biology method that varies the colors of experimental cups across trials to test visual preference while reducing bias from cup position or side. Researchers alternate color placement and record an organism’s choice, helping distinguish responses to color from consistent left-right preferences, lighting effects, or other features of the apparatus. This approach supports studies of visual discrimination, learning, memory, and foraging behavior in organisms such as insects and other model animals. By improving experimental control and repeatability, cup color alternation helps researchers interpret choice behavior more reliably and identify how environmental cues influence biological decisions.

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Human color vision is impressive. People with normal color vision can tell apart millions of individual hues. Most amazingly, this ability is achieved with fairly simple hardware. Part of the power of human color vision comes from a clever bit of engineering in the human brain. There, color perception relies on what is known as an 'opponent system.' This means that the presence of one kind of stimulus is treated as evidence for...

Synthesis and Functionalization of Nitrogen-doped Carbon Nanotube Cups with Gold Nanoparticles as Cork Stoppers

We discussed the synthesis of individual graphitic nanocups using a series of techniques including chemical vapor deposition, acid oxidation and probe-tip sonication. By citrate reduction of HAuCl4, the graphitic nanocups were effectively corked with gold nanoparticles due to the chemically reactive edges of the cups.

Color in Coordination Complexes When atoms or molecules absorb light at the proper frequency, their electrons are excited to higher-energy orbitals. For many main group atoms and molecules, the absorbed photons are in the ultraviolet range of the electromagnetic spectrum, which cannot be detected by the human eye. For coordination compounds, the energy difference between the d orbitals often allows photons in the visible range to be absorbed and emitted, which is seen as colors by the human eye.
