Dry Mass

Dry mass is the mass of biological material remaining after its water has been removed, providing an estimate of the organism’s solid biomass. In biology, researchers typically determine it by drying a sample under controlled conditions until its mass becomes stable, then weighing the residue; this separates changes in cellular material from variation in water content. Dry mass measurements support studies of microbial, plant, and algal growth, biomass production, and resource allocation. They also provide a practical basis for comparing samples, quantifying productivity, and assessing changes in biological material across experimental conditions.

This protocol aims to preserve cell metabolites for single-cell mass spectrometry (SCMS) by combining volatile salt solution washing, rapid liquid nitrogen quenching, freeze-drying, and −8 °C storage. It demonstrates that liquid nitrogen quenching is essential for maintaining metabolite profiles, while prolonged cold storage should be minimized to prevent metabolic alterations.

Dry Friction

2023

Dry friction occurs between two solid surfaces in contact as they attempt to move relative to one another. In daily life, dry friction is encountered in various forms, such as when walking on the ground, sliding an object across a table, or rubbing hands together. Despite its ubiquity, the underlying mechanisms behind dry friction are not readily visible. To illustrate this concept, imagine a wooden crate resting on a rough, non-uniform horizontal surface. When an external force is applied to...

Here we describe a high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) assay to quantify the immunosuppressant tacrolimus in dried blood spots using a simple manual protein precipitation step and online column extraction.

Drying Shrinkage

2024

When hardened concrete is exposed to air with a relative humidity of less than 100 percent, it begins to lose the free water within its capillaries. As this water evaporates, the water initially adsorbed onto the calcium silicate hydrates migrates towards these now empty spaces and eventually evaporates as well. Over time, as more water leaves, the volume of the concrete decreases, a phenomenon known as drying shrinkage. A portion of this drying shrinkage can be reversed; if the concrete is...

Lipid Droplet Isolation for Quantitative Mass Spectrometry Analysis

Lipid droplets are important organelles for the replication of several pathogens, including the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). We describe a method to isolate lipid droplets for quantitative mass spectrometry of associated proteins; it can be used under a variety of conditions, such as virus infection, environmental stress, or drug treatment.
