Electric Low Pressure Impactor

An Electric Low Pressure Impactor (ELPI) is an aerosol measurement instrument that rapidly determines the size and concentration of airborne particles, including biologically relevant aerosols. It draws particles through a series of low-pressure aerodynamic impactor stages, where they are electrically charged and separated according to aerodynamic diameter before collection on electrically isolated plates. Measuring the electrical current at each stage provides a real-time particle size distribution across a broad range, without requiring laborious post-collection analysis. In biology, ELPI supports characterization of bioaerosols, aerosolized cells or microorganisms, inhalation exposures, and particle-generating processes, helping researchers assess transport, deposition, and potential health risks.

Generating a Mouse Model of Traumatic Brain Injury Using an Impactor Device

2025

This video demonstrates the procedure for inducing traumatic brain injury (TBI) in a mouse model. An anesthetized mouse with an exposed skull is taken to create an opening in the skull, and then a controlled cortical injury is induced using an impact device. The injury damages the brain tissue, causing impaired cognitive function and motor coordination.

Generating a Traumatic Brain Injury Mouse Model Using an Impactor Probe

This video demonstrates the procedure for inducing an open-skull traumatic brain injury in a mouse by making a midline skull incision, drilling through the skull and removing the bone flap to expose the brain cortex, and applying high pressure to induce trauma. The wound is then sutured to prepare the mouse model for subsequent experiments.

A Contusive Model of Unilateral Cervical Spinal Cord Injury Using the Infinite Horizon Impactor

A reliable and repeatable way to produce a cervical unilateral spinal cord injury using the Infinite Horizon impactor is described. The method takes advantage of a custom designed frame and clamp to stabilize the spine. The standardized procedure and biomechanical injury parameters result in sufficient and sustained injuries.

The laser heated diamond anvil cell combined with synchrotron micro-diffraction techniques allows researchers to explore the nature and properties of new phases of matter at extreme pressure and temperature (PT) conditions. Heterogeneous samples can be characterized in situ under high pressure by 2D mapping and combined powder, single-crystal and multigrain diffraction approaches.

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN Electric potential, also known as "voltage", measures the electric potential energy per unit charge. Electric field is a scalar quantity and is fundamental to many electrical effects. Like potential energy, what is physically meaningful is the difference in the electric potential. For example, the spatial variation in the electric potential is related to the electric...
