Insecticidal Properties

Insecticidal properties describe the ability of a substance or organism to kill insects or suppress their survival, development, feeding, or reproduction. These effects arise when active compounds disrupt essential biological functions, such as nerve signaling, respiration, digestion, hormonal regulation, or the formation of the insect cuticle. In biology, studying insecticidal properties helps researchers evaluate plant defenses, microbial metabolites, synthetic chemicals, and other potential pest-control agents. This knowledge supports agricultural pest management, disease-vector control, and the development of targeted alternatives to broad-spectrum insecticides, while also informing assessments of environmental effects, resistance, and safety for beneficial organisms.

A Method for Evaluating Insecticide Efficacy against Bed Bug, Cimex lectularius, Eggs and First Instars

Insecticide evaluations are often targeted against adult insects, rather than immature stages. Here, we present a protocol for evaluating insecticides against bed bug eggs with a comparison to the first nymphal bed bug stage. These protocols could be adjusted for other insects to evaluate insecticide efficacy in non-adult life stages.

Topical Testing Assay: A Technique to Evaluate the Insecticidal Potential of Dopamine Receptor Antagonists on Adult Female Mosquitoes by Topical Application

2025

In this video, we demonstrate the topical testing assay to determine the toxicity of a potential insecticide on adult female mosquitoes. Using a dopamine receptor antagonist that causes lethal inhibition of neurotransmission in mosquitoes, this method describes a way to evaluate the toxic effects of insecticides upon topical application.

Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter

2020

The characteristics that enable us to distinguish one substance from another are called properties. Physical Properties of Matter A physical property is a characteristic of matter that is not associated with a change in its chemical composition. Familiar examples of physical properties include density, color, hardness, melting and boiling points, and electrical conductivity. We can observe some physical properties, such as density and color, without changing the physical state of the matter...

Protocols for Testing the Toxicity of Novel Insecticidal Chemistries to Mosquitoes

Cited by 6 •

2019

Protocols are described for assessing the toxicity of chemistries to immature and adult mosquitoes for development as new classes of larvicides, adulticides and endectocides. The protocols enable high-throughput testing of multiple chemistries at single-point dose and subsequent evaluation via dose response assay to determine toxicity on contact or via ingestion.
