Protofilament Arrangement

Protofilament arrangement describes how linear chains of protein subunits organize side by side to form larger biological filaments, influencing their shape, stability, and function. In microtubules, tubulin dimers assemble into protofilaments that associate laterally into a hollow cylinder, typically containing 13 protofilaments; their polarity and longitudinal contacts support plus-end growth, minus-end stability, and dynamic instability. This organization helps cells maintain structural integrity, position organelles, transport cargo, and separate chromosomes during division. Studying protofilament arrangement therefore connects molecular architecture with cytoskeletal mechanics and informs research on cell motility, intracellular transport, and disorders involving abnormal microtubule assembly.

Fascicle Arrangement in Skeletal Muscles

2025

Fascicles are bundles of muscle fibers in a skeletal muscle. Muscle fascicle arrangement is directly associated with the power and range of motion of various muscles. The configuration of these fascicles can vary, leading to different functional outcomes. The four primary types of muscle based on fascicle arrangement are: Parallel Muscles: In this type, fascicles run parallel to the long axis of the muscle. Examples include the biceps brachii and the rectus abdominis. When parallel muscles...

This article illustrates how the expression of neurotransmitter receptors can be quantified and the pattern analyzed at synapses with identified pre and postsynaptic elements using a combination of viral transduction of optogenetic tools and the freeze-fracture replica immunolabeling technique.

Metallic Solids

2020

Metallic solids such as crystals of copper, aluminum, and iron are formed by metal atoms. The structure of metallic crystals is often described as a uniform distribution of atomic nuclei within a “sea” of delocalized electrons. The atoms within such a metallic solid are held together by a unique force known as metallic bonding that gives rise to many useful and varied bulk properties. All metallic solids exhibit high thermal and electrical conductivity, metallic luster, and malleability. Many...

Tree Identification: How To Use a Dichotomous Key

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University A dichotomous key is a tool that identifies items in nature, such as leaves. This method is based on the idea of choosing between two characteristics. The word dichotomous comes from two Greek words that mean “to divide into two parts.” In a dichotomous key for leaf identification, each pair of phrases describes different features of the leaf. Only one of the phrases correctly applies to the leaf being keyed out. The...
