Student Experiment

A student experiment is a structured investigation in which learners test a question by collecting and interpreting evidence, making it a practical foundation for scientific reasoning. In biology, students typically formulate a hypothesis, identify variables, apply controlled procedures, record observations or measurements, and compare results with expected outcomes; repeated trials and appropriate controls help distinguish biological effects from experimental variation. These investigations can examine cells, microorganisms, plants, animals, or ecological systems while developing skills in experimental design, data analysis, and scientific communication. Student experiments also connect classroom concepts to authentic research practices and can reveal how evidence supports, challenges, or refines explanations of living systems.

2023

Source: Laboratories of Gary Lewandowski, Dave Strohmetz, and Natalie Ciarocco—Monmouth University A factorial design is a common type of experiment where there are two or more independent variables. This video demonstrates a 2 x 2 factorial design used to explore how self-awareness and self-esteem may influence the ability to decipher nonverbal signals. This video leads students through the basics of a factorial design including, the nature of a factorial design and what distinguishes it from...

Microsoft Excel: Student's t-Test

2025

Student's t-test in Microsoft Excel is a statistical method used to compare the means of two groups to determine if they are significantly different from each other. It's commonly used to evaluate hypotheses, such as testing whether a treatment has an effect compared to a control group. Excel provides built-in functions to perform t-tests, making it accessible for users needing to conduct basic statistical analysis. To conduct a t-test in Excel, use the T.TEST function or the "Data Analysis...

Student t Distribution

2025

The population standard deviation is rarely known in many day-to-day examples of statistics. When the sample sizes are large, it is easy to estimate the population standard deviation using a confidence interval, which provides results close enough to the original value. However, statisticians ran into problems when the sample size was small. A small sample size caused inaccuracies in the confidence interval. The Student t distribution was developed by William S. Goset (1876–1937) of the...

The Stanford Prison Experiment

2020

The famous and controversial Stanford Prison Experiment, conducted by social psychologist Philip Zimbardo and his colleagues at Stanford University, demonstrated the power of social roles, social norms, and scripts. Social Roles One major social determinant of human behavior is our social role—a pattern of behavior that is expected of a person in a given setting or group (Hare, 2003). Each one of us has several social roles. You may be, at the same time, a student, a parent, an aspiring...
