Biopsy Cytology Samples

Biopsy cytology samples are cellular preparations obtained from tissue biopsies and examined to assess cellular morphology, making them valuable for rapid evaluation of suspicious lesions in cancer research. Cells may be collected by scraping, imprinting, or aspirating tissue, then spread onto slides, fixed, and stained so features such as nuclear shape, chromatin, cell organization, and abnormal mitoses become visible by microscopy. Researchers use these samples to investigate tumor initiation, progression, and heterogeneity while comparing cytological findings with tissue architecture and molecular data. This approach supports biomarker studies, malignancy classification, and development of less invasive diagnostic workflows.

We collected, stained and imaged cells from the conjunctiva of the inner eyelid margin of human subjects. By characterizing cell morphology and metabolic activity, this method may further our understanding of dry eye and the role that friction between the ocular surfaces may play in perceiving ocular discomfort.
