Microsurgical Vessel Catheterization

Microsurgical vessel catheterization is a technique for placing a small catheter into a blood vessel through precise microsurgery, enabling controlled vascular access in experimental research. Under magnification, the vessel is exposed, temporarily controlled, and opened so the catheter can be inserted and secured while maintaining blood flow and minimizing tissue injury. In cancer research, this approach supports localized administration of therapeutics, contrast agents, or tumor-related experimental materials, as well as repeated blood sampling and vascular monitoring in animal models. By improving control over dose, timing, and delivery route, microsurgical vessel catheterization helps researchers evaluate treatment distribution, tumor responses, and vascular effects.

The use of domestic and miniature pigs in science has increased significantly in recent years. By demonstrating how to perform intubation, transurethral bladder catheterization, femoral artery and vein catheterization, as well as transcardial perfusion, we aim to further increase the value of Göttingen minipigs in biomedical research.

2022

Here, we present a protocol to preserve the vasal vessels in microsurgical vasoepididymostomy. The surgical security is enhanced by preserving the vasal vessels using a retrograde-anterograde dissociation and fixing the vasal vessels.

Catheterization of Intestinal Loops in Ruminants

We describe a novel surgical method for catheterizing 'intestinal loops' within the ileum of sheep. Once animals have recovered from surgery and have cleared antibiotics and analgesics, multiple treatments can be deposited directly in loops via the catheters.
