C18 Cartridge

A C18 cartridge is a solid-phase extraction device used to isolate and concentrate compounds from liquid samples before chemical analysis. It contains porous silica particles bonded with octadecyl (C18) hydrocarbon chains, which retain relatively nonpolar analytes through hydrophobic interactions while more polar matrix components pass through or are removed during washing. In a typical workflow, the sorbent is conditioned, the sample is loaded, the cartridge is washed, and retained compounds are eluted with a stronger organic solvent. This selective cleanup improves sample compatibility and can enhance sensitivity in chromatography and other analytical methods.

A Microfluidic Cartridge-Based Detection System for Allergen-Specific Immunoglobulin E

2025

This video demonstrates a protocol for detecting serum-specific immunoglobulin E using a microfluidic cartridge-based chemiluminescence system. Serum IgEs interact with distinct allergens immobilized in the reaction zone of the cartridge, which are subsequently detected with peroxidase-conjugated anti-IgE antibodies and a chemiluminescent substrate, allowing simultaneous detection of multiple allergen-specific IgEs.

We describe a protocol for filtration of water samples with a filter cartridge and extraction of environmental DNA (eDNA) without having to cut open the housing to remove the filter. This protocol is developed for metabarcoding eDNA from fishes, but is also applicable to eDNA from other organisms.
