Film Thickness Control

Film thickness control is the deliberate adjustment and measurement of a thin film’s thickness to achieve targeted chemical, physical, and functional properties. In chemistry, thickness depends on factors such as deposited material volume, solution viscosity, concentration, substrate condition, and processing variables including spin speed, withdrawal rate, temperature, and drying time. Techniques such as spin coating, dip coating, evaporation, and profilometry help produce and verify uniform films. Precise control supports reproducible coatings for sensors, catalysts, membranes, optical materials, corrosion protection, and electronic devices, while reducing defects and improving performance, stability, and manufacturing consistency.

Source: Logan G. Kiefer, Andrew R. Falkowski, and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Electroplating is a process that uses electric current to reduce dissolved metal cations so that they form a thin coating on an electrode. Other thin film deposition techniques include chemical vapor deposition (CVD), spin coating, dip coating, and sputter deposition among others. CVD uses a gas-phase precursor of the element to be...

We describe a method for the fabrication of large-area (up to 13 cm diameter) and ultrathin (as thin as 8 nm) polymer films. Instead of using a sacrificial interlayer to delaminate the film from its substrate, we use a self-limiting surface treatment suitable for arbitrarily large areas.
