Iodoform Test

The iodoform test is a qualitative chemical test used to detect methyl ketones and alcohols that can be oxidized to methyl ketones, making it useful for identifying functional groups in organic compounds. In aqueous iodine and base, the substrate is oxidized while its methyl group undergoes repeated iodination; alkaline cleavage then produces yellow precipitated iodoform (CHI3), along with a carboxylate. In chemistry laboratories, the test helps distinguish classes of carbonyl and alcohol compounds, supports structural identification, and demonstrates oxidation, halogenation, and haloform reaction principles. Results should be interpreted with appropriate controls because different compounds can produce the same positive reaction.

Identification of Unknown Aldehydes and Ketones - Concepts

Aldehydes and Ketones Aldehydes and ketones have a carbonyl group (C=O) as a functional group. A ketone has two alkyl or aryl groups attached to the carbonyl carbon (RCOR’). The simplest ketone is acetone, which has two methyl groups attached to the carbonyl carbon (CH3COCH3). An aldehyde is similar to a ketone, except that instead of two side groups connected to the carbonyl carbon, they have at least one hydrogen (RCOH). The simplest aldehyde is formaldehyde (HCOH), as it has two hydrogens...

2025

Robot-assisted natural orifice specimen extraction surgery is a minimally invasive technique that combines robotic precision with natural orifice specimen extraction. A 67-year-old patient successfully underwent the procedure in 290 min, with minimal bleeding and no residual cancer. This approach minimized abdominal trauma, reduced complications, and enabled a quick recovery.

Here, we present a protocol to use a curvelet transform-based, open-source MATLAB software tool for quantifying fibrillar collagen organization in the extracellular matrix of both normal and diseased tissues. This tool can be applied to images with collagen fibers or other types of line-like structures.
