Ph-sensitive Glass Electrodes

pH-sensitive glass electrodes are electrochemical sensors that measure the acidity or alkalinity of a solution by converting hydrogen-ion activity into an electrical potential. Their thin, hydrated glass membrane selectively exchanges ions with the surrounding solution, creating a membrane potential that varies with hydrogen-ion concentration; compared with a stable reference electrode, this potential follows a near-Nernstian response and is reported as pH. In chemistry, these electrodes support rapid, non-destructive measurements in aqueous samples, titrations, buffers, environmental analysis, and industrial process control. Their broad usefulness comes from combining selective response, straightforward calibration, and compatibility with automated pH meters.

The Looking Glass Self

The concept of the looking-glass self describes how an individual's self-concept is shaped by their perception of how others see them. This psychological theory, first introduced by sociologist Charles Horton Cooley in 1902, posits that self-identity emerges in a social context and is influenced by the judgments—real or imagined—of others.Research suggests that individuals frequently overestimate how positively others perceive them. This is particularly evident in physical self-perception,...

Source: Tamara M. Powers, Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University Today's modern world requires the use of a large amount of energy. While we harness energy from fossil fuels such as coal and oil, these sources are nonrenewable and thus the supply is limited. To maintain our global lifestyle, we must extract energy from renewable sources. The most promising renewable source, in terms of abundance, is the sun, which provides us with more than enough solar energy to fully fuel our...

On comparing the reactivity of silver and lead, it is observed that the two ionic species, Ag+ (aq) and Pb2+ (aq), show a difference in their redox reactivity towards copper: the silver ion undergoes spontaneous reduction, while the lead ion does not. This relative redox activity can be easily quantified in electrochemical cells by a property called cell potential. This property is commonly known as cell voltage in electrochemistry, and it is a measure of the energy which accompanies the charge...
