Surfactant Concentration Optimization

Surfactant concentration optimization is the systematic determination of the amount of a surface-active compound that delivers a desired balance of interfacial performance, stability, and material use. As concentration increases, surfactant molecules adsorb at interfaces and reduce surface or interfacial tension; once the critical micelle concentration is reached, additional molecules primarily form micelles in solution rather than further lowering tension substantially. In chemistry, optimization helps select conditions for emulsification, wetting, detergency, dispersion, and formulation stability. Measuring properties across a concentration series can reveal the most effective range, supporting reproducible experiments, efficient product design, and reduced excess surfactant in laboratory and industrial systems.

This paper demonstrates the experimental procedure to measure terminal settling velocities of spherical particles in surfactant-based shear thinning viscoelastic fluids. Fluids over a wide range of rheological properties are prepared and settling velocities are measured for a range of particle sizes in unbounded fluids and fluids between parallel walls.

Lavage-induced Surfactant Depletion in Pigs As a Model of the Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)

Repeated pulmonary lavages in anesthetized pigs induce lung injury resembling major aspects of human acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). For this purpose the lungs are repeatedly lavaged with 0.9% saline at 37 °C. The goal of the protocol is a reproducible mitigation of gas exchange and hemodynamics for research in ARDS.

Concentration Cells

A concentration cell is a type of a voltaic cell constructed by connecting two almost identical half-cells, both based on the same half-reaction and using the same electrode, differing only in the concentration of one redox species. A concentration cell's potential, therefore, is determined only by the concentration difference of the particular redox species. Consider the following voltaic cell: From the given information, the cell potential of this concentration cell can be calculated using...
