Vacuum Chamber Operation

Vacuum chamber operation is the controlled removal of gas from an enclosed vessel to create pressure below atmospheric pressure, enabling chemical processes under defined low-pressure conditions. A pump extracts gas through sealed connections while gauges monitor chamber pressure, and the resulting reduction in gas density can lower boiling points, promote solvent evaporation, and limit contact with oxygen or moisture. In chemistry, vacuum chambers support drying, degassing, concentration, sample preparation, and the handling of air-sensitive materials. Precise pressure control improves reproducibility and helps researchers study how reduced-pressure environments affect reactions, materials, and phase changes.

Source: Robert M. Rioux, Ajay Sathe & Zhifeng Chen, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Vacuum is required for a number of laboratory procedures. This is most routinely achieved in the laboratory by the use of vacuum pumps. In addition to working at low pressures, vacuum pumps can also be used to enable rapid changing of the atmospheres in a reactor or flask by evacuation and backfilling.

Operating the Glovebox

Robert M Rioux, Ajay Sathe, Zhifeng Chen, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA A glovebox is an isolated enclosure that is designed to maintain an inert atmosphere. The manipulation of chemicals or apparatus is done via the use of gloves, which allow operation while still maintaining an inert atmosphere. A positive pressure is utilized to compensate for any passive leaks. Objects can be transferred in and out of the box using an antechamber that acts as an airlock between the box...

This protocol describes how to build a small and versatile video camera, and how to use videos obtained from it to train a neural network to track the position of an animal inside operant conditioning chambers. This is a valuable complement to standard analyses of data logs obtained from operant conditioning tests.
