Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a flexible, camera-equipped endoscope to examine the lining of the rectum and entire colon, making it important for diagnosing gastrointestinal disease and preventing colorectal cancer. After bowel preparation, a clinician guides the lubricated instrument through the anus while viewing magnified images on a monitor; air or carbon dioxide may expand the colon, and instruments passed through the scope can remove polyps or collect biopsies. In clinical practice, colonoscopy investigates symptoms such as bleeding and altered bowel habits, supports screening, and enables immediate treatment of selected lesions, linking direct visualization with tissue-based diagnosis and long-term disease prevention.
