Oral Cavity Exam

An oral cavity exam is a systematic clinical assessment of the mouth and surrounding tissues used to evaluate oral health and identify abnormalities. Using adequate illumination, visual inspection, and gentle palpation, clinicians examine the lips, oral mucosa, gingiva, teeth, tongue, palate, and oropharynx for changes in color, texture, symmetry, tenderness, swelling, or lesions. This examination supports the detection of dental caries, periodontal disease, infection, trauma, and potentially suspicious mucosal changes. As a routine component of clinical care, it guides diagnosis, treatment planning, preventive counseling, and timely referral for further evaluation when necessary.

Humans have two sets of teeth throughout their lifetime: deciduous (baby) teeth and permanent teeth. Each tooth consists of several parts: the crown (visible part), the root (embedded in the jaw), enamel (hard outer...

Rapid fluctuations in extracellular dopamine (DA) mediate both reward processing and motivated behavior in mammals. This manuscript describes the combined use of fast scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) and intra-oral tastant administration to determine how tastants alter rapid dopamine release in awake, freely moving rats.
