Subcutaneous Medication

Subcutaneous medication is a method of delivering drugs into the fatty tissue beneath the skin, where it can provide practical and reliable absorption for clinical care. A needle deposits the medication into the subcutaneous layer, allowing it to diffuse through local tissue and enter nearby blood vessels; absorption is often slower than with intravenous administration and can vary with blood flow, injection site, and formulation. Clinicians use this route for medicines such as insulin, anticoagulants, and selected biologic therapies. Proper site selection, needle technique, and rotation help support consistent dosing while reducing discomfort, bruising, and local tissue injury.

Source: Madeline Lassche, MSNEd, RN and Katie Baraki, MSN, RN, College of Nursing, University of Utah, UT Subcutaneous medication administration is a parenteral approach to administer small amounts of medication (less than 2 mL) into the layer of tissue just below the skin. Common medications administered via the subcutaneous route include anticoagulant medications, such as heparin or enoxaparin; epinephrine administered for allergic reactions; insulin; and some immunizations. 2015

We present an experimental procedure of Candida albicans biofilm development in a mouse subcutaneous model. Fungal biofilms were quantified by determining the number of colony forming units and by a non-invasive bioluminescence imaging, where the amount of light that is produced corresponds with the number of viable cells.

Treating chronic or neuropathic facial pain can be challenging when medical or standard treatment fails. Subcutaneous nerve field stimulation is the least invasive form of neuromodulation and is used for chronic back pain. We applied this technology to treat chronic and neuropathic trigeminal facial pain.
