Technetium-99m

Technetium-99m is a metastable nuclear isomer widely used in clinical diagnostic imaging because it emits detectable gamma radiation while exposing patients to a relatively short-lived radioactive source. Produced primarily from molybdenum-99 generators, technetium-99m decays with a half-life of about six hours and can be chemically attached to radiopharmaceuticals that concentrate in specific tissues or organs. Gamma cameras detect the emitted photons to create planar images or single-photon emission computed tomography scans, helping clinicians assess blood flow, bone turnover, cardiac function, and organ structure. Its versatile chemistry, generator-based availability, and suitable physical properties make it central to nuclear medicine.

Source: Alycia G. Berman, James A. Schaber, and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana Here we will demonstrate the fundamentals of single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) imaging using mice. The technique involves injecting a radionuclide into a mouse, imaging the animal after it is distributed throughout the body, and then reconstructing the produced images to create a volumetric dataset. This can...

Nuclear chemistry is the study of reactions that involve changes in nuclear structure. The nucleus of an atom is composed of protons and, except for hydrogen, neutrons. The number of protons in the nucleus is called the atomic number (Z) of the element, and the sum of the number of protons and the number of neutrons is the mass number (A). Atoms with the same atomic number but different mass numbers are isotopes of the same element. A nuclide of an element has a specific number of protons and...
