Ultrasound Contrast Imaging

Ultrasound Contrast Imaging is a noninvasive technique that enhances ultrasound visualization by using contrast agents to reveal structures and fluid movement that may be difficult to distinguish in standard scans. Gas-filled microbubbles introduced into the circulation respond to an ultrasound field by oscillating and strongly scattering sound, producing brighter signals that reflect blood flow and tissue perfusion. In developmental biology, this approach can help monitor vascular formation, organ development, and physiological changes in living embryos or model organisms. Its real-time imaging capability supports studies of developmental dynamics while reducing the need for repeated invasive sampling.

Here, we present a protocol to inject ultrasound microbubble contrast agents into living, isolated late-gestation stage murine embryos. This method enables the study of perfusion parameters and of vascular molecular markers within the embryo using contrast-enhanced high-frequency ultrasound imaging.

We describe a new ultrasound-based vector tissue Doppler imaging technique to measure muscle contraction velocity, strain and strain rate with sub-millisecond temporal resolution during dynamic activities. This approach provides complementary measurements of dynamic muscle function and could lead to a better understanding of mechanisms underlying musculoskeletal disorders.

Source: Amelia R. Adelsperger, Evan H. Phillips, and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana High-frequency ultrasound systems are used to acquire high resolution images. Here, the use of a state-of-the-art system will be demonstrated to image the morphology and hemodynamics of small pulsatile arteries and veins found in mice and rats. Ultrasound is a relatively inexpensive, portable, and versatile method for the noninvasive...
