Cartography

Cartography is the science and practice of representing Earth’s surface and spatial information through maps, making geographic relationships easier to analyze and communicate. It combines surveying, geospatial data acquisition, coordinate systems, map projections, scale, and visual design to transform three-dimensional locations into accurate two-dimensional representations. In engineering, cartography supports site assessment, infrastructure planning, land surveying, transportation design, environmental monitoring, and hazard analysis. Digital cartography and geographic information systems also enable engineers to integrate satellite imagery, terrain models, and field measurements, improving spatial decision-making and supporting the design, construction, and management of resilient infrastructure.
