Drowned Outflow

Drowned outflow is the discharge of fluid from an opening or conduit into a downstream region whose water level submerges the outlet, making downstream conditions important to flow behavior. Unlike free outflow, the submerged outlet experiences back pressure, so discharge depends primarily on the difference between upstream and downstream hydraulic heads, together with outlet geometry and energy losses; the emerging jet may not be visible. Engineers analyze drowned outflow in culverts, gates, spillways, drainage systems, and reservoir outlets to predict capacity, water levels, and energy dissipation. Understanding it supports safer hydraulic design and helps prevent unexpected flooding or inadequate conveyance.

2019

An aortocaval fistula was created by puncturing the murine infra-renal aorta through both walls into the inferior vena cava and was followed by creation of a stenosis in its outflow via partial ligation of the inferior vena cava. This reproducible model can be used to study central venous stenosis.

Source: Jaideep S. Talwalkar, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT Through auscultation, the clinician is able "to eavesdrop on the workings of the body" to gain important diagnostic information.1 Historically, the term "auscultation" was synonymous with "immediate auscultation," in which the examiner's ear was placed directly against the patient's skin. Although this was standard practice for centuries, the method proved inadequate in nineteenth-century...

Propulsion and Thrust

Source: Alexander S Rattner; Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Aircraft, rockets, and ships produce propulsion by accelerating surrounding fluid or high temperature combustion products to high velocity. Because of the principle of conservation of momentum, the increased fluid velocity results in an effective thrust force on the vehicle. The thrust capabilities of propulsion systems are often measured with static thrust tests.

Topical Airway Anesthesia for Awake-endoscopic Intubation Using the Spray-as-you-go Technique with High Oxygen Flow

The topical anesthetic lidocaine was atomized using a high oxygen flow through the working channel of a flexible intubating endoscope to achieve topical airway anesthesia for awake endotracheal intubation. We prefer this modified spray-as-you-go technique for endoscopic intubation to classical bolus application because of higher patient satisfaction and better compliance.
