Pressure Shear Experiments

Pressure shear experiments are engineering tests that characterize how materials, interfaces, or components respond to simultaneous normal pressure and tangential shear loading. In a controlled setup, pressure establishes compressive contact while a driven shear force or displacement produces sliding, allowing researchers to measure friction, deformation, stress response, and failure conditions. These experiments help determine strength, stiffness, wear, and stability under combined loads rather than isolated stresses. Results support the design and assessment of joints, seals, geological materials, coatings, structural interfaces, and other systems where compression and sliding occur together.

Here, we present a detailed protocol of a new approach for conducting elevated temperature reverse normal plate impact, and combined pressure-and-shear plate impact. The approach involves the use of a breech-end resistive coil heater to heat a sample held at the front-end of a heat-resistant sabot to the desired temperature.

The laser heated diamond anvil cell combined with synchrotron micro-diffraction techniques allows researchers to explore the nature and properties of new phases of matter at extreme pressure and temperature (PT) conditions. Heterogeneous samples can be characterized in situ under high pressure by 2D mapping and combined powder, single-crystal and multigrain diffraction approaches.
