Sampling Property

Sampling property describes how a sample reflects the characteristics of a larger population and how reliably engineers can use sample data to infer population behavior. Its performance depends on the sampling method, selection bias, sample size, and the resulting sampling distribution, whose variability is commonly measured by standard error. With appropriately designed random or stratified sampling, larger samples generally produce more stable estimates and reduce uncertainty, although they cannot eliminate systematic bias. In engineering, sampling properties guide quality control, reliability studies, experiments, and sensor-data analysis, helping researchers quantify confidence in measurements and make defensible decisions without testing every component or observation.

Soil Core Sample Collection for Water Retention Property Analysis

2026

Source:Alessia J. Marchesan1, Guillermo Hernandez Ramirez11Renewable Resources, University of Alberta. This video demonstrates the technique for collecting a soil sample for hydraulic property analysis. The sampling area is cleared, and the top crust is evacuated. The sampling ring is then placed into the soil to collect the sample. The ring with the sample is then cleaned, labeled, packed, and transferred undisturbed for analysis.

Using Microwave and Macroscopic Samples of Dielectric Solids to Study the Photonic Properties of Disordered Photonic Bandgap Materials

2014

Disordered structures offer new mechanisms for forming photonic bandgaps and unprecedented freedom in functional-defect designs. To circumvent the computational challenges of disordered systems, we construct modular macroscopic samples of the new class of PBG materials and use microwaves to characterize their scale-invariant photonic properties, in an easy and inexpensive manner.

Physical Properties Of Minerals II: Polymineralic Analysis

2023

Source: Laboratory of Alan Lester - University of Colorado Boulder The physical properties of minerals include various measurable and discernible attributes, including color, streak, magnetic properties, hardness, crystal growth form, and crystal cleavage. These properties are mineral-specific, and they are fundamentally related to a particular mineral’s chemical make-up and atomic structure. This video examines several physical properties that are useful in field and hand sample mineral...

Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter

2020

The characteristics that enable us to distinguish one substance from another are called properties. Physical Properties of Matter A physical property is a characteristic of matter that is not associated with a change in its chemical composition. Familiar examples of physical properties include density, color, hardness, melting and boiling points, and electrical conductivity. We can observe some physical properties, such as density and color, without changing the physical state of the matter...
