Unit Step Function

The unit step function is a mathematical model of an abrupt change, representing a signal that switches from zero to one at a specified time and providing a foundation for describing time-dependent systems in engineering. Defined as u(t)=0 for t<0 and u(t)=1 for t≥0, it can be shifted to u(t−a) to model activation at time a; multiplying it by an amplitude scales the change. Engineers use unit step functions to construct piecewise inputs, analyze transient responses in circuits and control systems, and apply convolution to determine the output of linear time-invariant systems, making them valuable for system modeling, simulation, and response prediction.

A Functional Motor Unit in the Culture Dish: Co-culture of Spinal Cord Explants and Muscle Cells

Cultured muscle cells are an inadequate model to recapitulate innervated muscle in vivo. A functional motor unit can be reproduced in vitro by innervation of differentiated human primary muscle cells using rat embryo spinal cord explants. This article describes how co-cultures of spinal cord explants and muscle cells are established.

Measurement: Standard Units

2020

Every measurement provides three kinds of information: the size or magnitude of the measurement (a number), a standard of comparison for the measurement (a unit), and an indication of the uncertainty of the measurement. While the number and unit are explicitly represented when a quantity is written, the uncertainty is an aspect of the errors in the measurement results. The number in the measurement can be represented in different ways, including decimal form and scientific notation, which is...

Measurement: Derived Units

The International System of Units or SI system, by international agreement, has fixed measurement units for seven fundamental properties: length, mass, time, temperature, electric current, amount of substance, and luminosity. These are called the SI base units. Units of measurement derived from the mathematical combination of SI base units are called SI-derived units. For example, the ratio of the SI unit for distance (meter; m) and the SI unit for time (second; s) gives the SI-derived unit...
