Uniaxial Stress

Uniaxial stress is the internal force per unit area produced when a material is loaded primarily along a single axis, making it a fundamental concept in engineering mechanics and materials design. It develops when tensile or compressive forces act normal to a cross-sectional area, with normal stress calculated as force divided by area; the resulting deformation is described by axial strain and may include lateral changes through the Poisson effect. Uniaxial loading tests help determine elastic modulus, yield strength, ductility, and failure behavior, supporting material selection, structural analysis, component design, and safety assessment.

Stress-Strain Characteristics of Steels

2023

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA The importance of materials to human development is clearly captured by the early classifications of world history into periods such as the Stone Age, Iron Age, and the Bronze Age. The introduction of the Siemens and Bessemer processes to produce steels in the mid-1800s is arguably the single most important development in launching the Industrial Revolution that transformed much of Europe and...

Stress-Strain Characteristics of Aluminum

2023

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Aluminum is one of the most abundant materials in our lives, as it is omnipresent in everything from soda cans to airplane components. Its widespread use is relatively recent (1900AD), primarily because aluminum does not occur in its free state, but rather in combination with oxygen and other elements, often in the form of Al2O3. Aluminum was originally obtained from bauxite mineral deposits...

Modeling Social Stress

2023

Stress negatively affects our quality of life. In particular, some individuals experience social stress when placed in a social environment that they are unfamiliar with or have difficulty adjusting to. Since it is hard to examine mechanisms of social stress in humans, modeling this condition in animals may help scientist in developing new therapies for treating this commonly encountered problem. This science education video begins by discussing the known anatomy and physiology behind stress...
