Food Matrix Preparation

Food matrix preparation is the controlled processing of food samples so their chemical and biological components can be measured accurately, an essential step in environmental monitoring and contaminant analysis. It typically involves representative sampling, homogenization, and, when appropriate, drying, freezing, sieving, or extraction to produce a uniform test material while preserving target analytes and limiting contamination or loss. Proper preparation improves subsampling, analytical recovery, and result comparability, supporting the detection of pesticides, metals, persistent pollutants, nutrients, and other substances moving through food and environmental systems. Standardized procedures also strengthen exposure assessment, regulatory testing, and food-safety research.
