Handheld Ultrasonicator

A handheld ultrasonicator is a portable device that uses high-frequency sound energy to process liquid samples, making it useful for laboratory and environmental investigations. Its piezoelectric transducer converts electrical energy into mechanical vibrations that travel through a probe, producing cavitation bubbles whose rapid formation and collapse generate intense localized forces. These forces can disperse suspended particles, disrupt cells, homogenize samples, and assist the release of analytes from environmental materials such as water, soil, and sediment. By improving sample preparation and extraction, handheld ultrasonicators support chemical analysis, contaminant monitoring, and field-oriented environmental research.

2010

Drug self-administration and ultrasonic vocalizations (USV) are used as behavioral assessments in animal research, but rarely in combination. The purpose of this article is to describe the advantages of recording USVs during drug self-administration procedures to assess affective responses to drug experience.

2016

Mouse ultrasonic vocalizations are used as proxies to model the genetic bases of vocal communication deficits in mouse models for neuropsychiatric disorders. The present protocol describes three experimental contexts that reliably elicit ultrasonic vocalizations from pups (throughout development) and adult mice (same-sex interactions, male-estrus female interactions).

Handheld Device for Saliva Pretreatment to Improve Cortisol Detection

2026

This protocol describes a rapid saliva pretreatment method for improving cortisol detection. A handheld filtration device is used to remove mucins and other interfering substances while preserving the target analyte. The pretreated saliva exhibits improved capillary flow, thereby enabling more consistent and reproducible assay performance.
