Mosquito Mortality

Mosquito mortality is the death of individual mosquitoes within a population, a key measure for understanding population dynamics, ecosystem interactions, and disease-vector control. Mortality occurs when environmental stressors, limited resources, pathogens, predators, or insecticides disrupt essential processes such as development, feeding, reproduction, or nervous-system function. Measuring survival across life stages and under defined temperature, humidity, or exposure conditions helps researchers evaluate habitat quality and the effectiveness of mosquito-control interventions. These data support risk assessment for mosquito-borne diseases, guide insecticide-resistance studies, and clarify how environmental change influences mosquito abundance and broader ecological communities.

Mosquito Feeding Assay: A Method to Evaluate Test Compound Effects on Mortality and Fecundity of Adult Female Mosquitoes

2025

This video demonstrates a blood-feeding assay to evaluate the mortality and fecundity of test compounds with novel modes of action on female mosquitoes. This technique helps in screening new classes of insecticides to kill the resistant population of mosquitoes and control disease spread.

Larval Contact Assay: A Procedure to Evaluate Mosquito Larval Mortality following Direct Contact with Test Larvicidal Compound

In this video, we describe the larval contact assay to evaluate the toxicity of the dopamine receptor antagonist amitriptyline on the third instar stage larvae of mosquitoes, known vectors of several human infectious diseases. Assessing the larval mortality upon incubation with different amitriptyline concentrations over different time intervals helps determine its lethal concentration 50.

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes infected with Wolbachia are being released into natural populations to suppress the transmission of arboviruses. We describe methods to rear Ae. aegypti with Wolbachia infections in the laboratory for experiments and field release, taking precautions to minimize laboratory adaptation and selection.

In this candid interview, Anthony A. James explains how mosquito genetics can be exploited to control malaria and dengue transmission. Population replacement strategy, the idea that transgenic mosquitoes can be released into the wild to control disease transmission, is introduced as well as the concept of genetic drive and the design criterion for an effective genetic drive system. The ethical considerations of releasing genetically-modified organisms into the wild are also discussed.
