Mouse Model Establishment

Mouse model establishment is the process of creating and validating laboratory mouse systems that reproduce selected features of an immune response, infection, or disease. Researchers may use genetic modification, pathogen inoculation, transplantation, or controlled immune manipulation, then monitor clinical signs, pathogen burden, immune-cell activity, and tissue changes under defined conditions. These models help clarify host-pathogen interactions, identify mechanisms of inflammation and protection, and evaluate vaccines, antimicrobial agents, and immunotherapies before clinical studies. Careful selection of mouse strain, experimental conditions, controls, and humane endpoints is essential for producing reliable, reproducible findings that translate effectively to human immunology and infectious disease research.

Establishment and Characterization of UTI and CAUTI in a Mouse Model

Cited by 51 •

2015

The ability to model urinary tract infections (UTI) is crucial in order to be able to understand bacterial pathogenesis and spawn the development of novel therapeutics. This work’s goal is to demonstrate mouse models of experimental UTI and catheter associated UTI that recapitulate and predict findings seen in humans.

Establishing a Mouse Model of Vaginal Group B Streptococcus Infection

Source: Patras, K. A., Doran, K. S. A Murine Model of Group B Streptococcus Vaginal Colonization. J. Vis. Exp. (2016)This video demonstrates the preparation and vaginal inoculation of a hormone-treated female mouse with Group B Streptococcus to model infection. It explains how to culture and prepare the bacteria, administer the inoculum into the vaginal lumen, and ensure successful infection.

Establishing a Mouse Model of Small Fiber Neuropathy Using Resiniferatoxin

2025

This video demonstrates a method for establishing a small fiber neuropathy model in mice using the TRPV1 agonist resiniferatoxin (RTX). It outlines the steps involved in administering RTX to mice and explains how RTX induces neuronal death in small-diameter sensory neurons, thereby establishing the neuropathy model.

Establishing a Mouse Model of Burn Infections with Pathogenic Bacteria

Source: Wang, Y., et al. In Vivo Investigation of Antimicrobial Blue Light Therapy for Multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii Burn Infections Using Bioluminescence Imaging. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates how to establish a burn infection in a mouse model by applying a heated brass block followed by pathogenic bacterial inoculum. The bacteria colonize the exposed extracellular matrix and form a biofilm, enabling in vivo studies of host-pathogen interactions.

Establishing a Focal Demyelination Mouse Model via a Two-Point Injection of Lysophosphatidylcholine

2025

This video demonstrates the generation of a focal demyelination mouse model using a two-point Lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) injection. The skull of an anesthetized mouse is exposed. The injection coordinates are determined, and a hole is drilled to enable LPC injections at targeted sites. LPC induces focal demyelination of neurons via inflammation, while a two-point injection ensures its sustainability.
