T Lymphocyte Polarization

T lymphocyte polarization is the process by which naïve T cells acquire distinct functional programs in response to antigen and the surrounding immune environment. During activation, antigen recognition through the T-cell receptor combines with costimulatory signals and cytokines that induce lineage-defining transcription factors, guiding differentiation into subsets such as Th1, Th2, Th17, or regulatory T cells. Each polarized population produces characteristic cytokines and performs specialized roles, including activating macrophages, supporting antibody responses, recruiting neutrophils, or suppressing inflammation. In immunology and infection research, understanding this process helps explain pathogen-specific immunity, immune-mediated disease, vaccine responses, and strategies for manipulating host defense.

Group Polarization

Group polarization is the strengthening of an original group attitude following the discussion of views within a group (Teger & Pruitt, 1967). That is, if a group initially favors a viewpoint, after discussion the group consensus is likely a stronger endorsement of the viewpoint. Conversely, if the group was initially opposed to a viewpoint, group discussion would likely lead to stronger opposition. The phenomenon of group polarization explains many actions taken by groups that would not...

Dipole Moment of a Molecule Polar covalent bonds connect two atoms with differing electronegativities, leaving one atom with a partial positive charge (δ+) and the other atom with a partial negative charge (δ–), as the electrons are pulled toward the more electronegative atom. This separation of charge gives rise to a bond dipole moment. The magnitude of a bond dipole moment is represented by the Greek letter mu (µ) and is given by the formula shown here, where Q is the magnitude of the...

With effector functions distinct from other T cell subsets, Th17 cells have been centrally implicated in inflammatory autoimmunity. This in vitro Th17 differentiation protocol provides a means to determine whether naïve CD4+ T lymphocytes can differentiate into Th17 cells, and to further examine their role in autoimmunity and host response.
