Viral Transmission Control

Viral transmission control comprises the measures used to interrupt the spread of viruses between hosts, a central goal of immunology and infection research. These measures act on different stages of transmission by reducing infectious contacts, limiting exposure through isolation, ventilation, and hygiene, or preventing infection with vaccination and other protective interventions; antiviral drugs can further reduce viral replication and infectiousness. Public health teams apply these principles to surveillance, outbreak investigation, healthcare infection prevention, and community risk reduction. Effective control lowers transmission rates, protects vulnerable populations, and helps guide responses to emerging and established viral diseases.

Aphids are effective transmitters of plant viruses. Aphid microinjection of virus, the procedure we will show you today, is a technique allowing researchers to inject virus directly into the hemocoel of the aphid, bypassing the gut, one of the 2 major barriers for virus transmission in a circulative manner. The same technique is also used to inject dsRNA for RNAi.
