Tire Rubber Mechanics

Tire rubber mechanics is the study of how rubber compounds and tire structures deform, store energy, and transmit forces under loading. Mathematical models describe the material’s nonlinear, viscoelastic response, in which deformation depends on both strain and loading rate, while contact with the road converts these behaviors into traction, rolling resistance, and heat. Researchers combine constitutive equations, differential equations, numerical simulations, and laboratory measurements to predict tire performance across changing loads, temperatures, and speeds. These analyses support tread and compound design, improve vehicle safety and energy efficiency, and provide quantitative tools for relating material behavior to vehicle motion.

The Rubber Hand Illusion

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Reaching for objects, walking without hitting obstacles, landing on a chair as you sit (instead of falling to the floor), these and all our physical actions depend on an ability to perceive our own bodies in space, to know where our limbs are relative to one another and relative to the rest of the world. One way that the human brain encodes this information is called proprioception, the brain relies on its own control and feedback...

2013

We demonstrate how an objective measure can be employed in the widely employed rubber hand illusion paradigm. This measure is obtained by modifying the well-established crossmodal congruency task. This task allows the investigation of multisensory processes which are critical for modulations of body representations as in the rubber hand illusion.

The biosynthesis of cartilaginous extracellular matrix by chondrocytes can be affected by application of mechanical stimuli. This method describes the technique of applying dynamic compressive strains to chondrocytes encapsulated in 3D constructs and the evaluation of induced changes in chondrocyte metabolism.

Reaction Mechanisms

Chemical reactions often occur in a stepwise fashion, involving two or more distinct reactions taking place in a sequence. A balanced equation indicates the reacting species and the product species, but it reveals no details about how the reaction occurs at the molecular level. The reaction mechanism (or reaction path) provides details regarding the precise, step-by-step process by which a reaction occurs. For instance, the decomposition of ozone appears to follow a mechanism with two steps:
