Bladder Pressure Recording

Bladder pressure recording is a urodynamic method that measures pressure changes within the bladder during filling and urination, helping assess lower urinary tract function. A catheter records intravesical pressure as fluid enters the bladder, while additional pressure measurements may distinguish bladder muscle activity from pressure generated by the abdomen; changes are evaluated alongside bladder volume and urinary flow. In medicine, this test supports the assessment of urinary incontinence, incomplete emptying, bladder outlet obstruction, and neurogenic bladder. The results can clarify whether symptoms arise from impaired storage, abnormal contractions, or difficulty coordinating bladder and urethral function, guiding diagnosis and treatment planning.

Approximately 3-8 million people in the United States suffer from interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS), a debilitating condition characterized in part by pelvic pain. In order to study nervous system contributions to the condition, a physiological model of urinary bladder pain is used in mice and rats.

The Use of Cystometry in Small Rodents: A Study of Bladder Chemosensation

Cystometry is an efficient technique to measure bladder function of small animals in vivo. The bladder is continuously infused at rates controlled through an intravesical catheter, whereas the urethra is left free for micturition. This allows for repetitive filling and emptying of the bladder, while intravesical pressure and voided volume are recorded.
