Cardiac Allograft

A cardiac allograft is a heart transplanted between genetically nonidentical individuals, most often from a deceased donor to a patient with advanced, otherwise untreatable heart failure. After transplantation, the recipient’s immune system recognizes donor antigens, including human leukocyte antigens, as foreign and can activate T cells that damage the graft; immunosuppressive therapy reduces this response but requires careful monitoring. Cardiac allografts provide effective circulatory support and can improve survival and quality of life for selected patients. Clinical management includes tissue matching, surveillance for acute or chronic rejection, infection prevention, and assessment of long-term graft function.

Implantation of autologous and allogeneic bone grafts constitute accepted approaches to treat major craniofacial bone loss. Yet the effect of graft composition on the interplay among neovascularization, cell differentiation and bone formation is unclear. We present a multimodal imaging protocol aimed to elucidate the angiogenesis-osteogenesis interdependence at the graft proximity.

Streptococcus pneumoniae forms discrete non-purulent microscopic lesions in the heart. Outlined is the protocol for a murine model of cardiac microlesion formation. Instruction is provided on microlesion visualization using microscopy, discrimination between early and late microlesions, and methods to detect cardiac remodeling in hearts of convalescent animals.
