Circumpapillary Double Circular Scan

Circumpapillary double circular scanning is an optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging method that acquires two concentric circular scans around the optic nerve head to assess peripapillary retinal structures. By directing low-coherence light into the retina and measuring reflected light as it returns, the technique generates cross-sectional data from two predefined circumferences, enabling comparison of retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and structural features at different distances from the disc. In medicine, these measurements support optic nerve evaluation, particularly in glaucoma assessment and longitudinal monitoring, where localized thinning may indicate damage or progression. Standardized scan geometry can also improve comparability across examinations.

The Circular Dichroism Spectroscopy Technique to Study DNA-Protein Interactions

2025

This video demonstrates the circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy technique to study conformational changes occurring in DNA in the presence of ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling protein. The changes in the CD spectra measured in the presence and absence of ATP hydrolysis indicate the importance of ATP in the ability of the remodeler to induce conformational changes in the bound DNA.

Deformation in a Circular Shaft

One of the distinctive characteristics of circular shafts is their ability to maintain their cross-sectional integrity under torsion. In other words, each cross-section continues to exist as a flat, unaltered entity, simply rotating like a solid, rigid slab. To understand the distribution of shearing stress within such a shaft, consider a cylindrical section inside this circular shaft. This section has a length of L and a radius of R, with one end fixed. The radius of the cylindrical section is...

Circular Flow: Two Sector

An economy runs on the continuous movement of money, goods, and services between households and firms. The two-sector circular flow model focuses only on households and firms. It leaves out things like government, foreign trade, or banking to help us see the basic interactions more clearly. Households include individuals or families who earn income and use it to buy things they need. Firms are businesses that produce those goods and services using household resources. This creates a cycle where...

Leaky Scanning

During most eukaryotic translation processes, the small 40S ribosome subunit scans an mRNA from its 5' end until it encounters the first start AUG codon. The large 60S ribosomal subunit then joins the smaller one to initiate protein synthesis. The location of the translation initiation is largely determined by the nucleotides near the start codon as there may be multiple translation initiation sites present on the mRNA. Marilyn Kozak discovered that the sequence RCCAUGG (where R stands for...

Differential Scanning Calorimetry

Source: Danielle N. Beatty and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is an important measurement to characterize thermal properties of materials. DSC is used primarily to calculate the amount of heat stored in a material as it heats up (heat capacity) as well as the heat absorbed or released during chemical reactions or phase changes. However, measurement of this heat can also lead to...
