Drug Delivery Methods

Drug delivery methods are the routes and technologies used to transport therapeutic agents to their sites of action while controlling exposure, timing, and dose. They include oral, injectable, inhaled, topical, and transdermal administration, as well as formulations designed for immediate or controlled release; each method influences how a drug is absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and eliminated. In medicine, selecting an appropriate delivery method can improve treatment effectiveness, reduce adverse effects, and support adherence by matching drug properties with patient and disease needs. Advances in targeted carriers, sustained-release systems, and personalized administration continue to expand options for treating complex conditions.

Many therapeutic applications require safe and efficient transport of drug carriers and their cargoes across cellular barriers in the body. This article describes an adaptation of established methods to evaluate the rate and mechanism of transport of drug nanocarriers (NCs) across cellular barriers, such as the gastrointestinal (GI) epithelium.

Intrarenal Drug Delivery in Rats: A Method to Deliver Therapeutic Drugs in Rat Kidney via Intra-arterial Injection

(2019)This video demonstrates a non-invasive ophthalmic drug delivery method for targeted neuromodulation. The drug is delivered via eye drops, absorbed into the circulation, crosses the blood-brain barrier, and activates specific neuronal receptors.

After puncturing the aorta through the inferior vena cava (IVC) to create an aorto-caval fistula in the mouse, solution containing a drug is infused into the IVC via the same needle, followed by incubation. This method enables more robust drug delivery to the venous endothelium compared to the external route.
