Donor Lung Preservation

Donor lung preservation is the set of methods used to maintain lungs outside the body between organ recovery and transplantation, limiting injury that could compromise graft function. Conventional preservation uses cold storage and specialized solutions to reduce cellular metabolism and oxygen demand, while ex vivo lung perfusion circulates a warm, oxygenated solution through the organ to support assessment and, in some cases, reconditioning. These approaches help extend the time available for transplant coordination, evaluate organs that may initially appear unsuitable, and improve donor-lung utilization. Effective preservation can reduce ischemia-reperfusion injury and support safer outcomes for patients undergoing lung transplantation.

2024

We describe an ex vivo isolated working rat heart protocol to test donor heart preservation strategies. This paper describes the protocol for use in static cold storage of rodent donor hearts; however, the protocol can also be used for donor hearts obtained after donation after circulatory death and brain death.
