Expansion Sleeve Devices

Expansion sleeve devices are medical components designed to enlarge or adjust their diameter within the body, enabling controlled support, access, or tissue separation during treatment. They work by converting an applied force, such as balloon inflation, mechanical deployment, or release of a constrained self-expanding structure, into radial expansion against surrounding tissue or another device. In medicine, this principle can stabilize passageways, create working space, or improve the fit of implants and delivery systems while allowing a smaller profile during insertion. Their design balances expansion force, flexibility, placement accuracy, and biocompatibility to provide effective support with minimal tissue disruption.

Source: J. Jacob Chavez, Ryan T. Davis, and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Thermal expansion is extremely important when considering which materials will be used in systems that experience fluctuations in temperature. A high or low thermal expansion in a material may or may not be desirable, depending on the application. For instance, in a common liquid thermometer, a material with a high thermal expansion would be...

The prevalence of diabetes and obesity is continuously increasing worldwide. The mechanisms between diabetes, obesity and their associated mortality and co-morbidities need to be further investigated. Here, we present a protocol for sleeve gastrectomy (SG) in animals as an uncomplicated preclinical model of bariatric surgery.
