Fundus Photography

Fundus photography is a noninvasive imaging technique that captures detailed photographs of the interior surface of the eye, including the retina, optic disc, macula, and retinal blood vessels. A specialized fundus camera uses controlled illumination and optical magnification to focus light through the pupil and record reflected images, sometimes after pharmacologic dilation or with additional filters. In medicine, these images help clinicians document normal anatomy, monitor changes over time, and identify features associated with diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and vascular disease. Fundus photography also supports screening, diagnosis, treatment planning, and research into systemic conditions that affect the eye.

The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) supports the sensory retina through recycling visual cycle byproducts, which accumulate as lipofuscin. These products are autofluorescent and can be qualitatively imaged in vivo. Here, we describe a method to quantitatively image RPE lipofuscin using confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy.
