Hand Surgery

Hand surgery is a specialized field of medicine that diagnoses and treats disorders and injuries affecting the hand, wrist, and forearm, where precise anatomy is essential for movement, sensation, and grip. Treatment works by restoring alignment, stability, blood flow, nerve signaling, or tendon continuity through approaches ranging from splinting and rehabilitation to operative repair, reconstruction, and microsurgery. Clinicians apply these principles to fractures, lacerations, tendon and nerve injuries, arthritis, nerve compression, and congenital differences, tailoring care to damaged tissues and functional needs. Advances in imaging, surgical instruments, tissue reconstruction, and therapy improve recovery and help patients regain dexterity, strength, independence, and quality of life.

The Rubber Hand Illusion

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Reaching for objects, walking without hitting obstacles, landing on a chair as you sit (instead of falling to the floor), these and all our physical actions depend on an ability to perceive our own bodies in space, to know where our limbs are relative to one another and relative to the rest of the world. One way that the human brain encodes this information is called proprioception, the brain relies on its own control and feedback...

University of Notre Dame, IN The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals1 dictates that rodent survival surgery be performed aseptically. Aseptic technique utilizes specific practices that minimize the contamination of the surgical site, including patient preparation, surgeon preparation, sterilization of instruments and other supplies, and the use of a clean and controlled environment. Asepsis is the practice of preventing or breaking the chain of infection. The nurse employs aseptic techniques to prevent the spread of microorganisms and reduce the risk of diseases. Hand hygiene is the cornerstone of aseptic techniques and is classified into medical and surgical asepsis. Medical asepsis includes hand hygiene and the use of gloves. Surgical asepsis, or the sterile technique, refers to practices that render and keep objects and areas free of microorganisms. Hand washing...

Rodent Stereotaxic Surgery

Stereotaxic (or stereotactic) surgery is a method used to manipulate the brain of living animals. This technique allows researchers to accurately target deep structures within the brain through the use of a stereotaxic atlas, which provides the 3D coordinates of each area with respect to anatomical landmarks on the skull. After the skull is exposed, anesthetized animals are mounted on a specialized instrument known as a stereotaxic frame, which enables the precise placement of experimental...
