Inverted Screen Test

The Inverted Screen Test is a visual-perceptual assessment that presents information in an upside-down orientation to examine how the brain organizes and interprets visual input. During testing, a person views rotated symbols, objects, patterns, or scenes, and the clinician compares recognition, identification, or response accuracy with performance on normally oriented stimuli. This altered orientation increases the demand on visuospatial processing and object recognition, helping characterize how visual information is integrated beyond basic sight. In medicine and neuropsychology, the test can support assessment of perceptual function, document atypical visual processing, and contribute to the evaluation of neurological or cognitive disorders alongside other clinical examinations.

The Inverted-face Effect

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University In perception, it is often the case that the ability to recognize and interpret complex stimuli feels effortless but actually demands complicated and intensive processing. This is because processing is specialized and automated for certain types of very important stimuli. Among the best examples of this phenomenon is face processing. People do not try to detect and recognize faces. It just seems to happen. However, detecting faces...

Inverting and Non-inverting OpAmps

In an inverting amplifier, the input voltage is connected through a resistor to the inverting terminal. Meanwhile, the non-inverting terminal is grounded and a feedback resistor is established between the inverting and output terminal, as depicted in Figure 1. Figure 1: The inverting amplifier The objective is to discern the relationship between the input voltage (vi) and the output voltage (vo). By applying Kirchhoff's Current Law (KCL) and presuming the operational amplifier to be ideal, the...

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. DC power is unidirectional and flows in one direction, whereas, AC current alternates directions at a frequency of 50-60 Hz. Most common electronic devices are designed to run off of AC power; therefore an input DC source must be inverted to AC. Inverters convert DC voltage to AC through switching action that repeatedly flips the polarity of the input DC source at the output or load side for part of...

Here we describe a cell-based reporter gene assay as a valuable tool to screen chemical libraries for compounds modulating post-transcriptional control mechanisms exerted through 3’ UTR.

Genetic Screens

Genetic screens are critical tools for defining gene function and understanding gene interactions. Screens typically involve mutating genes and then assessing the affected organisms for phenotypes of interest. The process can be “forward”, where mutations are generated randomly to identify unknown genes responsible for the phenotypes, or it can be “reverse”, where specific genes are targeted for mutation to observe what phenotypes are produced. Here, JoVE reviews various types of genetic...
